Cancel car insurance in Switzerland: deadlines, special cancellation rights & free template

After a claim, you have just 14 days to cancel; on a sale, change of holder or premium increase, a special cancellation right opens outside the ordinary deadline. Most people dutifully wait for 31 December and thereby waste the most powerful tool in Swiss insurance law. We show you every exit with the exact deadline and the ICA article behind it.

Key takeaway
You cancel your car insurance ordinarily with 3 months' notice to the contract end (often 31 Dec), and thanks to VVG Art. 35a also after 3 years at any time to year-end. Special right on a premium increase, change of holder (VVG Art. 54) and after a claim (14 days, VVG Art. 42). ⛔ Liability cover is compulsory: never cancel before the car is deregistered or re-insured.

🛡️ Liability or casco? Two insurances, two sets of rules

Motor third-party liability is compulsory and bolted to the licence plate and registration document, casco (partial and comprehensive), by contrast, is voluntary and can be shed far more freely. Two completely different insurances are stuck to your car, and whoever mixes them up cancels the wrong one.

Hence the key rule: never cancel liability into a void. As long as the vehicle is registered, cover is mandatory, otherwise the road traffic office blocks the plate. First deregister, sell or re-insure, then cancel. Casco you can rethink separately: for an old car, often only partial casco is still worth it. For a pure comparison of several policies, the general guide to cancelling insurance helps with the ICA logic.

🚪 The special cancellation rights, the exits almost no one knows

After a claim, under ICA Art. 42, only you may cancel within 14 days (the 2022 revision removed this right from the insurer), on a change of holder the contract transfers to the new owner under ICA Art. 54 (30 days to decline it), and a premium increase opens an extraordinary cancellation right. So you do not always have to wait for the renewal date, that's the real lever; on a sale or deregistration, casco also ends and liability is suspended. The finder below shows the exact deadline for your situation; the general logic is in the cancel-insurance guide.

Context
The good news since the 2022 ICA revision: after a claim, only you can cancel, the insurer can no longer get rid of you after paying out (the former mutual right was abolished, ICA Art. 42). You have 14 days from the claim settlement; cover lapses 14 days after the cancellation is delivered. Unhappy with the service after an accident? You hold the upper hand, but only cancel once the new policy is in place.

Your cancellation right

On a sale the casco cover ends; liability is suspended from the deposit/re-registration of the licence plate. Inform the insurer in writing, otherwise the contract merely continues suspended.

⏱️ Cancellation deadlines: ordinary, three-year, extraordinary

For car insurance, your contract date counts, not a fixed calendar day. Ordinary: cancellation with 3 months' notice to the contract end (renewal date, often 31 December). The 3-year right: since the ICA revision (in force since 1 Jan 2022) you can cancel any contract after at most 3 years, at any time to year-end, with 3 months' notice, even if it runs longer (ICA Art. 35a). Add the special rights in the table. What always counts is receipt at the insurer, not the postmark.

The most expensive car insurance isn't the one with the highest premium, but the one you don't exit because no one told you a premium increase had already opened the door.

The reminder alerts you ~3 months before expiry — in time.

Not legal advice. Your policy + terms govern. Deadline = receipt at the insurer, not send date.

🏆 The ConvivaPlus verdict

We reviewed the ICA, the practice of Swiss car insurers and the official authority information. The ConvivaPlus verdict: the biggest mistake is passive waiting. Whoever dutifully waits for the renewal date overlooks that a premium increase, sale, change of holder and claim open a door at any time, and that after 3 years, under ICA Art. 35a, you can exit anytime anyway. Second rule: never cancel compulsory liability into a void, first deregistration or a new policy, then cancellation. Compare premiums neutrally, not via a broker on commission.

💡Did you know?

A premium increase opens an extraordinary cancellation right, you don't have to wait for the renewal date. And after 3 years, ICA Art. 35a lets you cancel any contract at any time to year-end.

Nach dem Parkschaden war ich so genervt vom Schadendienst, dass ich gewechselt habe. Dass nur ich kündigen darf und der Versicherer mich nicht mehr loswird, war mir neu. Starke Sache seit der Revision.

Frage: mein Vertrag läuft schon vier Jahre.

Vorlage generiert, eingeschrieben, fertig. Merci, das hät mer grad e Huufe Zit gspart.
