🔎 What sets this parade apart from every other one
Flawil's tourist association writes a sentence none of the other 22 recorded organisers writes: it asks residents along the route to switch off shop-window and advertising lighting — «so that the finely carved turnip lanterns really come into their own». It is the only place in this entire survey where an organiser addresses not the participants but everyone else. And it is the point at which a children's parade becomes a village event: here you can take part even without walking.
The second thing that sets Flawil apart is in the name. A «Lägeli» is not a lantern but a wooden barrel— the one in which, as legend has it, St. Othmar carried wine. The night is therefore named after a wine barrel, not after the turnip you carry. Of all the recorded events only two bear a name without the word «Räbeliechtli»: this night and the Räbechilbi in Richterswil. For one of the two you need to know a saint's legend to understand what it is.
The missing date hangs on the same thing. Other organisers in this survey tie their date to a weekday within the month — «first Saturday», «second Saturday». Flawil ties it to a saint's day: the Tuesday after St. Othmar, 16 November. That is unique in this survey, and it is why the Lägelisnacht falls each year somewhere between 17 and 23 November — that is, after everything else. The last verified evening of this season is 14 November 2026. Flawil would come after it.

If you only want to watch, you do not need the perfect spot: the procession comes past a second time in several places.
- 4The date is derived, not confirmedThe Tuesday after 16 November gives 17 November in 2026. That calculation is ours, not the association's – and it is not unambiguous every year, because 16 November can itself fall on a Tuesday. Check with the tourist association before travelling.

Flawil lies outside that window, and behind it. While the busiest evening of the season, 6 November 2026 with 5 simultaneous parades, is long past and in most municipalities the turnips are on the compost heap, the season in Flawil is only beginning. That makes the Lägelisnacht the latest event in this vein — and, for anyone who does not want to miss out in November, the last date still to be had.

A village that switches off its shop windows for one night has made a decision — and anyone who has seen how differently a carved turnip reads in real darkness understands at once why. Add the late departure at 18:45, which serves the same end.
Two caveats. First, it is a Tuesday: school calls the next morning, and for an event that only sets off at 18:45 that is not a side issue. Second, the date is not fixed. The rule is clear, but it hangs on a saint's day — and «the Tuesday after 16 November» is no longer unambiguous in a year when the 16th itself falls on a Tuesday. Check before travelling; do not calculate.

Wenn d Schaufenschter usgange sind, isch es plötzlich würklich dunkel im Dorf. Das isch de ganz Unterschied — mir händ das als Chind für sälbverständlich gnoh und gmerkt erst spöter, wie speziell das isch.
«Diensdig nach St. Othmar» — ich ha das jahrelang nöd verstande und eifach gfrogt. Es isch e Schuelnacht, das mues me wüsse: die Chliine sind am Mittwuchmorge nöd zwängs fit.
Lägeli isch es Wiifass, nöd e Räbe. Das wüssed sälbst hie im Dorf nöd alli. Am Schluss gits e Wurscht mit Brot — und ehrlich, die schmöckt nach eme Umzug eifach anders.
