Swiss timetable change 2026: senior GA +7.2%, 30 new fares
For adults, the 2nd-class GA goes up by CHF 100. For seniors it is CHF 220, almost three times as much in percentage terms. We compared 30 Alliance SwissPass fares, every one that also appears in the last price list from 2023: who pays the most, why the Price Supervisor only slowed part of it, and where your canton publishes its timetable changes.
🚆 Timetable change 2026: Sunday 13 December 2026
The change happens in 2026, but it brings the «2027 timetable»: only 19 of its days fall in 2026, 345 in 2027. The Federal Office of Transport sets the 2027 timetable year from 13 December 2026 to 11 December 2027.
Timetable and fares change on the same day. The new tariffs of Alliance SwissPass, the Zurich transport network and many other networks apply from 13 December 2026. For most commuters the first working day afterwards is what counts, Monday 14 December 2026: that is when you ride your usual route on the new timetable for the first time.
💸 Swiss transport fares 2027: what gets more expensive?
The 2nd-class senior GA goes from CHF 3,040 to 3,260, +220 or +7.2%. The adult GA in the same class rises by CHF 100, +2.5%. Of all 30 prices compared, only the GA for 25-year-olds rises less in percentage terms than this adult GA.
These fares had not changed since 10 December 2023. Now all 30 products compared go up, but not equally: most of all the bike pass, +7.7% (from CHF 260 to 280), least of all the GA for 25-year-olds, +1.1% in 1st class. The table is sorted by percentage increase.

🧮 GA price 2027: the Fare Check
The same GA, bought by the month: more than twice the rise.
The adult GA monthly pass rises by 5.7% in 2nd class, more than twice as much as the annual GA in the same class. People who commute only in some months carry the bigger increase.
Choose your pass and class: old price, new price, increase and rank among all 30 products, and for the GA a comparison with Half Fare.
GA adult, 2nd class: CHF 3,995 → 4,095, +100 (+2.5%).
Rank 28 of 30 by percentage increase (1 = steepest).
Paid monthly: 12 × 365 = CHF 4,380 in the first year, CHF 285 more than with the annual invoice.
With Half Fare: CHF 195 + 2,000 = 2,195 a year, against CHF 4,095 for the GA adult, 2nd class. Half Fare stays cheaper until your Half Fare tickets cost CHF 3,900 a year.

⚖️ Price Supervisor GA: increase halved, but only for adults
The OASI pension (AHV) rises by 1.6% on 1 January 2027, the 2nd-class senior GA by 7.2% as early as 13 December: more than four times as much. The Price Supervisor only slowed the adult GA, to +100 francs (+2.5%) instead of +200 (+5.0%). The agreement does not mention the senior GA.
Alliance SwissPass had submitted an average increase of 3.9% on 31 March 2026. On 4 August 2026 it agreed with the Price Supervisor on 3.6%. Two prices were changed: the adult GA in 2nd class (+100 instead of +200) and 1st class (+250 instead of +330). In addition, SBB will sell saver tickets in long-distance traffic in 2027 with a discount volume of at least CHF 90 million. The Price Supervisor examined the tariff measures under Article 6 of the Price Surveillance Act (paraphrased; there is no official English version of Swiss federal law).
The reduction is meant to benefit the customers who depend most on public transport and have hardly any alternatives, above all commuters with a GA.
Price Supervisor, media release of 4 August 2026 (paraphrased; there is no official English version)
The Federal Council decided the 1.6% adjustment of the OASI pension on 2 October 2026; it applies to the minimum and the maximum pension alike.
📅 GA monthly payment: dearer and cancellable
Anyone paying for the 2nd-class adult GA monthly pays 12 × 365 = CHF 4,380 in the first year, CHF 285 more than with the annual invoice (4,095).
The Price Supervisor writes for both adult GAs that the monthly prices are adjusted accordingly. The prices with monthly invoice from 13 December 2026 are in the Alliance SwissPass price list, for every GA type and both classes. The Fare Check above shows your monthly price.
Since 15 December 2024, Alliance SwissPass provides that if the price changes because of tariff measures, the contract of a GA with monthly payment can be cancelled extraordinarily at the end of the current subscription month, at the time the first invoice at the new price is received, without observing the minimum contract term. What counts is therefore the first invoice at the new price, not 13 December.
🎫 ZVV multi-journey tickets: the discount goes
In the Zurich transport network (ZVV), discounts on multi-journey tickets disappear completely, while short-distance tickets and local networks cost the same as before. Buying in advance no longer saves anything.
The Zurich cantonal government approved an average increase of 2.7% (decision no. 979/2026, announced on 24 September 2026). Passes and single tickets rise by 2.1% on average. The canton's reasoning: the national tariff has had no discounts on multi-journey tickets for years. The ZVV is aligning itself with the national tariff.
The timetable change creeps forward: 13 December 2026, 12 December 2027, 10 December 2028. The 2027 and 2028 timetable years each last exactly 52 weeks, Sunday to Saturday: one day shorter than a calendar year, two in the leap year 2028.
🔀 Timetable 2027: new changes and lines
In Zug, two municipalities asked for one of their own stops to go: under the canton's draft timetable of 22 May, the bus stops Pfad in Cham and Moosrank in Baar are discontinued at the request of the two municipalities. Anyone who boards there will need another stop from 14 December.
Nidwalden goes the other way: with the Staldifeld double track in service, the canton plans 2 trains an hour all day between Lucerne and Engelberg.
The draft for the whole of Switzerland was published on öv-info.ch on 22 May, and the consultation ran for 19 days, until 9 June. In the canton of Aargau alone, 185 submissions came in, 142 of them from private individuals.
In Nidwalden, Stansstad and Hergiswil get a direct connection to Engelberg, and the S4 runs to Dallenwil and Wolfenschiessen only in the evening (canton of Nidwalden, 21 May 2026). In Zug, bus 648 ends at Cham, new line 644 runs Cham–Knonau, and the S1 Lucerne–Zug–Baar is strengthened at weekends in the evening (draft timetable, 22 May 2026). Jura concentrates bus line 8 Delémont–Moutier on peak hours, with no change planned on the rail network; the government still has to confirm the proposals.
The final timetables for all of Switzerland are published before the change. Details once the timetable is published; checked on 21 October 2026.
✅ Check your commute: Monday 14 December 2026
From 13 December, the 2nd-class GA costs CHF 4,095, but for the commute federal tax allows at most CHF 3,300 in travel costs: CHF 795 of the pass is not deductible there. For cantonal and communal tax, the rule of your canton of residence applies. If you live at your place of work during the week, as a weekly resident, you also deduct the extra cost of lodging and meals.
The change falls on a Sunday, the first commute afterwards on Monday 14 December 2026. If you look up your connection in advance, you won't discover a shifted minute or a new change on the platform.
- Search for your connection in the online timetable with a date from 14 December, not today.
- Compare departure time, platform and changes with your current route.
- Check in the table below what your canton publishes about the timetable.
- Check your pass: new price in the Fare Check; if you pay monthly, wait for the first invoice at the new price.
- In the ZVV: from 13 December, multi-journey tickets have no discount.
🗺️ Timetable by canton: where yours publishes its changes
In Zurich, the deadline had already passed 53 days before the national draft timetable even appeared: change requests for the 2027 timetable had to reach the municipality of residence by 30 March, while the draft for the whole of Switzerland only went up on öv-info.ch on 22 May. On 9 March, the ZVV had put two timetable years out for consultation at once, 2027 and 2028.
Each canton orders its own regional transport and therefore publishes its own timetable changes. The table lists all 26 cantons with their official page: 13 have their own timetable-procedure page, in 11 the public-transport office is listed.
All 26 offices checked on 21 October 2026, each linked directly to the official page. Where a canton has no timetable page of its own, its public transport office is listed.
