Winter weather in Zurich


In winter, the climatical phenomenon inversion layer, showing up in coverage of low stratus cloudy sky and can persist for several days. A cold wind named Bise coming from the northeast can reach Gale-forth to the western shore of the Lake Geneva.

Humid air masses coming from Nothern Europe cause a lot of precipitation while damming up along the Pre-Alps. Here, thunderstorms become very frequent, not seldom with hail.


The Foehn


Another climatic phenomenon is the Foehn, a warm and dry wind orginating from the south. During Foehn, temperatures are significantly higher than average in the region. However, Foehn stroms can reach very strengh and dangerous force.
